Scholarships and Prizes

The NZLS has wound up its Centennial Scholarship and Centennial Maori Scholarship funds. It now offers one annual award – the Cleary Memorial Prize, a prestigious prize for lawyers in their first three years after admission.

From 2008, the Cleary Memorial Prize is being administered by the NZ Law Foundation.

The NZ Law Foundation also offers the International Research Fellowship, New Zealand's most prestigious fellowship for legal professionals. This award of up to $100,000 is made annually. Another award the NZ Law Foundation offers is the Ethel Benjamin Scholarship. This scholarship allows outstanding women scholars to undertake postgraduate studies in law – up to $20,000 at a New Zealand university or up to $50,000 at an overseas university. Up to two scholarships may be awarded each year.

The foundation also provides grants for research and other projects, though not generally for postgraduate degree research or study.

For information on undergraduate and postgraduate awards and scholarships from other sources, see your university website (links to the five university law schools are at our web page Is the law for you) or awards handbook, or the website of the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors Committee.
