Rule Of Law Committee

The Rule of Law Committee has prepared or is preparing discussion papers on the Electoral Finance Act 2007,
the Overseas Investment Amendment Regulations 2008 (arising from the proposed takeover of Auckland International Airport Ltd) and Acting Judges of the Supreme Court.

The committee monitors both domestic issues and international situations of concern and lends support to other bodies dealing with rule of law issues in these areas. The committee has supported the Canadian Bar Association’s call for the closure of Guantanamo Bay (which was supported by a large number of international and national legal associations), the Commonwealth Lawyer’s Association (CLA) statement on the electoral situation in Kenya, the International Bar Association’s condemnation of attacks on the Law Society of Zimbabwe and LAWASIA’s statement criticising the detention without trial of HINDRAF leaders in Malaysia.

Relationships with important initiatives such as the World Justice Project and the rule of law work and
activities of the IBA and CLA are being established.

The committee intends to work with other NZLS committees, in particular the Human Rights and Legislation Committees.

The Rule of Law Committee welcomes any comments or information from practitioners in relation to these or any other rule of law issues.
