Frequently asked questions - Landonline Stage Two (conveyancing)

Digital Signatures and Digital Certificates

Is the digital signature a number not to be lost, eg. on a smartcard?
No. It is a string of numbers generated by combining your digital certificate and the data being signed. It is unique to that combination. The signature will be stored permanently within the Landonline database and can be verified at any time in the future.

Does the Digital Certificate holder have to log in to perform their functions?
Yes, the certificate holder is the only person allowed to use the Landonline session established using their certificate.

Does the Digital Certificate reside on the conveyancer's PC or is it portable?
A digital certificate must only be installed on one PC at any one time. Instructions for deleting a digital certificate and moving it to another PC are included in the RA User Guide.

How does a firm control the digital certificate of a staff member who leaves?
The firm's System Manager can immediately remove that person from the list of who can use the firm's licence(s). In the event of the System Manager not being available, LINZ can be contacted to remove the user's rights to use of a licence.

Can firms or members of firms request revocation of a digital certificate?
Yes, digital certificate users, or a firm's System Manager are obliged to make LINZ aware of any misuse or security issues relating to their digital certificates. LINZ will take steps to ensure any requests for revocation are authentic before actioning the revocation. LINZ will follow up on the cause of the revocation request to ensure the likelihood of further breaches is minimised.
