Welcome

Established in 1994, the WCG is an advisory body to the NZLS Board. Independent from the Society's committee structure, it provides a forum for discussion on a range of issues that impact on women within the legal profession.

The role of the NZLS Women's Consultative Group is:

  1. To improve the status and position of women in the legal profession and promote their advancement and retention.
  2. To increase the influence of women in the legal profession in decision making at all levels.
  3. To promote the interests of women generally, within the legal system.
  4. To act as a consultative group to the NZLS Board and other entities.

The Women's Consultative Group consists of a broadly representative group of women involved in the legal profession through-out New Zealand. The WCG members are appointed annually by the Board of the New Zealand Law Society. It is the Boards policy to consider a range of factors in the selection and appointment process:

  • The particular experience and expertise of applicants in light of the terms of reference of the group;
  • Geographical representation to reflect the range of areas where members practice;
  • The need for appropriate diversity of ethnicity including Māori, Pacific Islanders and Asian members.
Membership is open to any practising member of the profession (although non-members may also be appointed).
